You know that closet… or place… where everything lands when you come in the door? I took a look at mine today to make sure it only contains what I intend for it to contain.
I’m easing myself back into the de-cluttering. After a week with a very sick little boy, a week of travel, and a week of house guests, I’m finally ready to jump back into the challenge… by heading to the coat closet.
You may or may not have an actual closet. But this is that spot. You know the one. The spot where all the stuff gets unceremoniously dumped when you walk in the door. Or, we can hope, where all the stuff gets put away when you walk in the door. It can happen.
We have a coat closet. We also have a shoe chest. I prefer not to have shoes on in the house, so we needed a place to put the shoes. It’s far from a perfect system (digging through to find a pair…) but it sort of works for now. And that’s where all the shoes go.
But, back to the coat closet. This is one of those spots in the house that it really helps to have a clear vision of what you actually want to live in the closet. Otherwise it can quickly become the “black hole closet” into which random and assorted things get stuffed, never to be seen again.
I took a good look at our coat closet today. I decided what it’s purpose was going to be when we moved in last year, so it’s not gotten too out of hand. Here’s what I intend to have live in there:
- Coats (right?)
- Reusable grocery bags
- My husband’s cycling gear
That last category got added this last year when he bought an electric bicycle to ride to work. He needed a place close to the door to keep his helmet, gloves, rain gear, etc.
For the most part, everything that was in there was supposed to be in there. The only thing that went in the “Put Away” box was a bag of my husband’s old clothes that I put in there last year (oops!) to take to my favorite donation station. So… I moved that into the garage (my designated gathering place) with the other donations I’m collecting from this de-cluttering process.
For my “Give Away” box, I took a long hard look at all of my coats. I’ve been holding on to a red wool coat for years now… and I’m pretty sure I’ve only worn it once. It’s actually a little too big for me and when I put it on, I immediately feel itchy around my neck. Hence, the reasons why I’ve only worn it once. There’s another coat that I thought was exactly what I was looking for when I bought it. Turns out, it’s not. It’s actually a little too tight. So the time has come. Out they come.
I’m considering selling these two online. They’re in mint condition, so they’re perfect candidates for re-sale. I realize that spring is not the best time to sell a coat. But we’ll see. If I do, I’ll share how my online clothing sales go (something I’ve been wanting to try anyway.)
Finally, there wasn’t very much to “Throw Away”. All of the reusable bags are still in good condition. There were a few dust bunnies I caught at the bottom of the closet. And one lone broken sea shell. Bon Voyage!
Coat Closet buttoned up! I’m gonna sort through the shoes in the bench (there are a couple of old little boy shoes that need to come out) and then I’ll call it a day.
